  A mechanical sieve may be unable to retain an elongated particle whose length is greater than the sieve opening (mesh) size by a factor as large as 22, as shown by image analysis of the sieved particles (Igathinathane C et al 2009a). Similar length-based particle separation inconsistencies in mechanical sieving were also observed by Womac AR et al 2007.
