Major orthogonal dimensions (length and width) of particles, whose centroid falls within the outline, were determined with the ImageJ user-coded machine-vision Java plugin using the “pixel-march” method of delineating the projected particle boundary (Igathinathane C et al 2009c). This pixel-march method, validated with digital calipers, has accuracy greater than 96.6%. The method can be applied to measure the dimensions of naturally occurring particles with irregular outlines (e.g. food grains) and their particle size distribution.
