High-resolution digital images using an inexpensive flatbed scanner (resolution of 4 µm; disjoint particle arrangement) were analyzed by a user-coded machine vision ImageJ Java plugin to measure accurately (particle size accuracy >98.9%) and quickly (>587 particles/s) particle size distribution of irregular shaped dust particles generated during production of wood and bark pellets (Igathinathane C et al 2009b; see also Igathinathane C et al 2009a). The geometric mean lengths of these particles were determined to be 0.0736±0.0076 and 0.0607±0.0071 mm, respectively. Results obtained with this method are comparable to those obtained with the much more time-consuming mechanical sieving.
