A shape identification strategy for simple shapes, such as straight and inclined squares, rectangles, ellipse, as well as circle, based on three shape parameters: reciprocal aspect ratio, rectangularity, and the Feret diameter major axes ratio as well as a strategy of determination of the shape length and width by using appropriate correction factors were developed by Igathinathane et al 2008. Length and width of objects, after identifying the objects' shapes, were determined using appropriate correction factors applied to the fitted ellipse major and minor axes, respectively. The shape identification and dimension measurement strategies were coded into a machine vision ImageJ plugin. This plugin can also categorize other irregular objects by using these simple shapes. Variations of particle shape, size, and orientation on the length and width evaluation had minimal effect (< 1.3% mean absolute deviation from reference image dimensions). Errors of the shape dimensions by using the major and minor axes or dimensions of a bounding rectangle to represent the shape length and width, respectively, depend on the orientation of the rectangular, square, and triangular shapes.
