Volume scattering function of natural waters - seawater Parent topic

VSFs of seawater
Fig. 1. Representative volume scattering functions [VSF, β(θ), where θ is the scattering angle] of seawater.
The blue diamonds and curve denote the data of Petzold TJ 1972 (station 7 in clear ocean water off the Bahama Islands, wavelength 530 nm).
The red diamonds and curve denote the data of Lee et al 2003, calculated using their phf06 for turbid coastal waters off the New Jersey (USA) Atlantic coast (LEO-15 experiment, year 2000, wavelength 550 nm).
The similar shapes of the these VSFs reflect the relative stability of the shape of the particle size distributions (PSD) in natural waters (for example, Jonasz M and Zalewski 1978), while the different magnitudes reflect the difference in the particle concentrations.
Note that VSFs quite different than those have also been reported (green diamonds and curve , unpublished data - courtesy of Y. C. Agrawal - referred to by Agrawal YC 2005, station 313, depth of ~6 m, summer 2001, also measured in coastal waters off New Jersey, USA).
The blue- and red-coded data represent presumably waters with smooth particle size distributions (PSD). If a narrow-size-range particle population dominates the PSD and also light scattering in an angular range, the VSF may assume a shape somewhat different than that shown here (see Fig. 2 in VSF at the small angles for natural dispersions).
