Reproducibility of a Galai particle counter Prev topic | Next topic

Time-of-transition (TOT) particle counters, such as Galai CIS counters measure the particle chord length distribution (CLD) for suspensions. The chord length is measured each time a tightly focused laser beam, scanning the suspension along a small circular track, intersects a particle outline.

The Galai instruments employ "black-box"- type algorithms that compensate the results for the influence of various factors affecting the measurement of the chord length (for example, Weiner et al 1998). Results obtained for natural suspensions with these particle counters have been reported to both significantly differ from those obtained with other methods and suffer from low reproducibility (for example, Tsai 1996). Bohling (2005) have recently reviewed the literature on these topics and added two previously unreported factors: the operator influence (through sample handling) and the PSD itself. Even with the same operator, variations on repetitive analyses can be as large as 20%.
