A scattering particle as an antenna Prev topic | Next topic

The EM wave enhancement in near-field scattering is markedly pronounced only when the scatterer physical parameters (size, shape and refractive index) assure resonant scattering, given the wavelength of the incident EM field. At resonance, the particle act as an “antenna” for the incident light, collecting the incident energy from its surroundings (Bohren CF 1983) and concentrating it in its immediate vicinity (Atwater HA and Polman 2010a, Mohammadi A et al 2009). Detailed studies are crucial for optimization of this effect since the absorptive nature of scatterers and confinement of their near-field limit the optimization parameters’ space (Mertens H et al 2007).
