RTE numerical solution methods: Adding-doubling technique Prev topic | Next topic

This step-wise technique of solving the radiative transfer equation (RTE) is very simple conceptually. In the first step, the radiative characteristics of a thin scattering layer are calculated by using the analytical single scattering approximation (for example, Solving RTE in the small-angle scattering approximation for a medium illuminated at normal incidence. The optical thickness of the initial layer is on the order of 10-6 . In the next step, the layer thickness is doubled and the interaction between two layers is taken into account. The process is repeated until the desired optical thickness is reached. Instead of doubling, one can also successively add scattering layers of a given optical thickness. [AAK]
