Fig. 1. Complex refractive index of polystyrene, m = m' - m"i. The real part, m', spectrum (top panel) is based on the Cauchy equation fit, Eq. 1, to the data of Matheson and Saunderson (1952) as quoted by Chen et al (2003) (green curve) for bulk polystyrene. A Cauchy equation fit (red curve) and the data (symbols) of Ma et al (2003) were obtained for polystyrene in the form of ~1 µm diameter microspheres. Note that the real part of the refractive index of bulk polystyrene is approximately identical to that of the particulate polystyrene (green curve) in a wavelength range of 860 to 1580 nm. The imaginary part, m" (bottom panel) is based on an approximation by Chen et al (2003) (green curve, Eq. 2) to the absorption spectrum data of Li et al (1991) for polystyrene dissolved in chloroform and on the data of Ma et al (2003) (symbols) obtained for the particulate polystyrene. Vertical lines are error bars (+/- 1 SD). Data marked by symbols were kindly provided by X.-H. Hu.
