Power, Zipf, and Pareto laws Prev topic | Next topic

Power law:

 y(x) = t x-s  (1)

where t and s are constants, has been extensively used in environmental sciences, such as meteorology and oceanography, as an approximation for the PSD (see Power law PSD). Vidondo et al (1997), who discuss the power law in oceanographic applications, also list applications of power law across sciences. Newman (2005) has recently reviewed the properties of, processes leading to, and applications of the power law across sciences.

The power law is known as Zipf and Pareto laws in social and economic sciencies.
