The EOF method applied to approximate the atmospheric aerosol PSD: Sample results Parent topic

Approximations of PSD of aerosol with EOF

Fig. 2. Sample approximations (curves) with EOFs, Eq. 1 in The EOF method applied to approximate the atmospheric aerosol PSD, of selected differential particle size distributions (symbols) from a set referred to in the caption of Fig. 1. The particle diameter has the meaning of the equivalent spherical particle diameter. The middle size distribution (green) is essentially the mean distribution (large open symbols, see also Fig. 1) because the amplitude β1 is close to zero for this size distribution. The upper size distribution (blue) features a high contribution of the first eigenvector (Fig. 1). In this case the amplitude β1 is about 66% of the maximum amplitude β1, max ≈ 6933. The lower size distribution (red) features a low (negative) amplitude β1 of ~62% of the minimum amplitude β1, min ≈ -493. See also a numerical data file.
