Mie theory: Tests for function A

Prev topic | Next topic

Kattwar and Plass (1967) provide an asymptotic test for function An(y) (as defined in Algorithms for functions of the sphere size and refractive index) for n >> mx and m being real:

 An ≈ (n + 1) / (mx)  (1)

where m is the refractive index of the sphere relative to that of the surrounding medium and x is the relative sphere size.

Simple tests of the correctness of calculations of the an and bn coefficients have been provided by van de Hulst (1981):

 | an - 0.5 | ≤ 0.5  (2)
 | bn - 0.5 | ≤ 0.5  (3)

where the equality sign applies to spheres with the real refractive index m.
