Mitchell DL 2002 discusses arguments for defining the effective optical particle diameter, Deff, of a dispersion as follows:

where, D is the particle diameter and n is the particle size distribution of the dispersion.
Kahnert FM 2004 was able to reproduce the attenuation and scattering coefficients as well as the forward peak of the scattering function of fine dust aerosol by assuming spherical particle shape of the dust particles. He also retrieved the effective size parameter of the dust, i.e. the average particle diameter weighed by the PSD, from light scattering data to within few percent by assuming spherical particle shape.
