Measuring attenuation of light: Optimum pathlength defining factor at significant photon noise Parent topic

Pathlength-dependent factor with photon noise

Fig. 2. Dependence on cz, where c is the attenuation coefficient and z is the pathlength, of the lower bound of the relative error in the attenuation coefficient, <dc>/<c>, Eq. 5 (blue curve) when the photon noise of the transmitted light power is significant. This dependence is calculated for the instrumental noise (parameter e in Eq. 5) equivalent to 0.9 times the average number of the signal photons. It is compared to the dependence of the pathlength-dependent factor in the Eq. 3 (red curve) for the relative error dc/c of the attenuation coefficient on the nondimensional optical pathlength, cz, (i.e. the optical thickness) of the medium.
