Measuring attenuation of light: Optimum pathlength defining factor Parent topic

The pathlength-dependent factor in the Eq. 3 for the relative error dc/c of the attenuation coefficient, c, as a function of the nondimensional optical pathlength, cz, (i.e. the optical thickness) of the medium, with z being the geometrical pathlength. This factor assumes a minimum of at cz = 1. Hence, for example, at cz = 1 with a given relative error in the measurement of the power of light, / Φ0, where Φ0 is the power of light entering the medium, dc/c = -exp(1) / Φ0 ~ -2.718 / Φ0. The above relationship applies when the photon shot noise is not significant. See also a modified relationship accounting for the photon noise (Fig. 2).
