| A 5 μm polystyrene latex particle flowing along a microfluidic channel at 300 μm/s is pushed across the channel by a cross-directed weakly-focused Gaussian beam (1 W) at a wavelength of 532 nm, emitted by the optical fiber (Fig 4. in Kim SB et al 2008b, reproduced by permission of the ACS). The particle position coordinates are expressed in units of ω0, the waist radius of the laser beam. Parameters U* and d p* are the dimensionless flow velocity and particle diameter, respectively. This light-effected translation, depending on the optical cross section of the particle, is the basis of a cross-type optical technique of particle separation developed by Kim SB and colleagues.
