Electric field tunes WGM resonances in a fluorescent liquid-crystal microsphere

WGM resonance tuning in LC microsphereFig. 1. Electric-field shifts significantly and quickly WGM resonances of a liquid crystal microsphere in a polymer matrix (Humar M et al 2009). The image maps the intensity of fluorescence (blue = low, red = high) emitted by a 17.1 µm microsphere of E12 nematic liquid-crystal and SPP-106 fluorescent dye (see also Fig. 5 in Humar M et al 2009). The fluorescence spectrum of the dye is strongly enhanced at wavelengths corresponding to the resonances. At electric field which shifts the resonances so that a resonance becomes aligned with the exitation wavelength (514.5 nm, outside the spectral range shown here), the fluorescence is strongly enhanced overall (the center-right part of the image) due to efficient coupling of the exitation light to the microsphere.
