Scattering angle - an angle, typically denoted by θ, between the direction of propagation of the incident light and the direction of observation of the scattered light (see the figure).

The reference plane is selected by the experimenter. The scattering plane contains the incidence and observation directions, as identified by the scattering angle, θ, and the azimuthal angle, φ. The polarization of light is specified in respect to the scattering plane.
