PSICAM - point-source integrating-cavity absorption meter. This type of the absorption meter is optimized for use with dispersion of particles, i.e. a medium that not only absorbs but also scatters light. In this instrument, the sample fills a spherical integrating cavity which is illuminated by a "point source" located at the center of the cavity. Due to the high and diffuse reflectivity of the cavity surface, light scattered by particles in the sample is to a large degree retained inside the cavity, making the power of light reaching a detector located at the cavity surface and shielded from the direct illumination by the point source, dependent primarily on the absorption of light by the sample.
