NIR - near infrared electromagnetic radiation. This term refers typically to a wavelength range of ~750 to ~1000 nm (for example, Wyatt CL 1991), albeit other definitions are used, for example, extending the upper limit to 1400 nm (1.4 µm) to coincide with the wavelength of the first major peak in the water absorption spectrum (for example, Kou L et al 1993) or 5000 nm (5 µm, especially in astronomy). The range of 1000 to 5000 nm is sometimes referred to as the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR; for example, Wyatt CL 1991).
