Eutrophic - the state of a water body, which is rich in mineral and organic nutrients that promote a proliferation of plant life, especially algae. The eutrophic state is characterized by a reduced dissolved oxygen content. See also mesotrophic and oligotrophic. Carlson RE 1977 proposed a quantitative trophic state index defined for lakes but applicable to water bodies in general.
